Metsovo and Meteora, 1999 |
||
After exiting the ship in Igoumenitsa we headed inland toward Volos on the opposite coast. The trip would take us across the mountains and promised to be slow and not stomach-friendly for passengers. After 80 km we came to Ianinna, but with Katie fast asleep we decided to continue on to Metsovo. Paris and Penny had recommended Metsovo over Ianinna, so we were hoping for the best as we pulled off the road and wound down into the valley. Metsovo offered beautiful mountain vistas and a pretty downtown.
The highlight of the visit to Metsovo, besides the food, was the huge old trees in the park in the town center.
After a very nice night in Metsovo, with a family DVD session after dinner with a lot of hugging, we woke and headed for Volos. En route to Volos we planned to stop for lunch and site-seeing in Meteora. This area just out of the mountains is reknowned for its several monasteries perched atop huge rock formations which jut out from the earth. The sites really were extremely cool. The rock formations have cool shapes and grooves sculpted when the area was under water many eons ago. Daddy and Nick climbed a little bit but the going quickly became vertical and we decided it wouldn't be prudent to continue.
We left Meteora after the lunch and climbing and headed to Volos...
